Dear readers (yes there where more than 100 of you say the Blog stats…) a quick update on the date when MEPs will debate it out to elect their first democratically elected president.
The Europe group of the Union of European Federalists has contacted the 7 candidates for the European Parliament (EP) Presidency asking them if they supported or not the #1Head2Votes proposal.
To date, we expect to have a majority of candidates supporting #1Head2Votes, with only one explicitly saying No to it.
True, we have got only two definite replies from #EPpresident candidates: a Yes (from Mrs Forenza (GUE – European Left) and a No from Mr. Rebega (ENF – European nationalists – an oxymoron ;-)).
We expect Mrs. Lambert (Greens) and Mr. Verhofstadt (ALDE- European Liberals) to support us, although we have no formal reply from their staff. Both have publicly supported similar proposals or, in Guy’s case, even put it in the report he drafted for ‘The European Parliament after Brexit’.
Mr Pittella’s (S&D – European socialists) staff told me he would support us, but he has not confirmed. On the contrary, Mrs Stevens (ECR – European Conservatives) sent a tweet liking our proposal, but her staff need to “consult the group” before replying. With British Tories and Polish PiS leading it, we doubt she will be able to support us officially – for the moment.
We have no news at all from the favourite. Despite speaking three times with his assistant, we have no reply from Mr. Tajani (EPP – European Christian Democrats and People’s Party – whatever that means).
Following the publication of my article by EurActiv on 10 January the Belgian press has been discussing the issue, mainly on radio – listen to the first 5′ of http://www.rtbf.be/auvio/emissions/detail_la-semaine-de-l-europe?id=592 – and the article is trending on Google, where it is the 9th page coming up in a search on the “European Parliament Elections”.
